King Bhadavar and Brahmani Mata
18 kilometres from Etawah town, in the dense forest of Balrai, near River Yamuna is a 555 year old temple that is remembered for the Shakti worship conducted there in ancient times. In Etawah, Firozabad, Agra, Bhind, Gwalior, Manipuri, Auraiya district and in other adjoining areas, this temple of Goddess Brahmani, known as Barmani Mata here, is a centre of great faith and belief. Situated among the ravines of Jaswant Nagar on the banks of the Yamuna River, this temple reminisces the ancient Shakti Puja. There are various views regarding the erection of this temple.
According to the prevailing story, Ma Brahmani appeared in King Bhadavar’s dream and said, “I am buried in the land near Yamuna River, now build my temple”. The next day King Bhadavar excavated the idol of Goddess Brahmani from the land near the river Yamuna. According to other legends, King Bhadavar had brought Mata Brahmani from Myanmar (Burma) on one condition. In both the legends, the condition was, “In whichever spot you turn to look back, I will stop and establish myself there. It was in this place that the king heard a voice and looked back and the statue of the mother assumed a massive form and as per the condition, King Bhadavar built this temple around 1500 AD. Even today, the royal family of Bhadavar worships Goddess Brahmani as their family deity.
Brahmani Mata Garbhgrah
It is believed that the temple’s sanctum sanctorum was built by the divine architect Vishwakarmaji along with a Bisa Yantra. The temple has 12 gates and idols of nine planets. Also located around the temple area are nine wells.
According to the Hindi calendar, a fair is organized 3 times a year, during the months of Chaitra, Aashad, and Ashwin (kawar). Chaitra Navratri is the most popular, and devotees turn up in large numbers. The count of people attending goes into lakhs and there are more than a hundred shops set up. The flags offered in the worship of Goddess Brahmani go into thousands. Carrying the flags (neja) and pots of wheat grass (jawars), many devotees walk for miles to reach the temple; some of them prostrating again and again on the ground. Having reached the temple they experience peace and with their wishes fulfilled, they return home happy. At present, there is also a temple here dedicated to Lord Shiva and Hanuman.
