Harrapan-Indus civilization:
Lunkaransar is a small, closed, dry basin surrounded by dunes at the northeastern region of the Thar Desert. The lake levels were very shallow and fluctuated often 11,700 years ago and then rose abruptly around 6,300 years ago. The major Harrapan-Indus civilization began and flourished in this region 1000 years after desiccation of the lake.
Why it is called Lunkaransar :
It gets its name from Salt which is called “Lun” in the local language. There once was a salt lake in this location which is dry now. Lunkaransar Lake in Rajasthan is a Playa lake formed due to deflation. Playa is a flat bottom dry lake, found in the arid and semiarid region of the interior of desert basin. It periodically covered with water that slowly filtrates into ground or evaporates in the air. This causes deposition of salt, sand and mud in the lake.
